Liberty and Responsibility

June 2, 2009

Star Parker and Victor Frankl make a great point in Star Parker’s column here.   From now on, whenever you hear someone say, “everyone has a right to _____ (fill in the blank),” ask them if any responsibilities go along with that right.

Try it.  “Everyone has a right to receive a free eduction.”

“What responsibilities go along with that right?”

“Huh?”

“Do they have a responsibility to attend class each day, well groomed, without disrupting the classroom?  Do they have the responsibility to demonstrate sufficient mastery of the subject matter before earning a passing grade?”
